Eileen S. Carpenter, MD, PhD
Early detection of cancers in patients with pancreatic cystic neoplasms
Pancreatic cysts are still the only identifiable precursor lesions for pancreatic cancer, but today’s cross-sectional imaging and cyst-fluid analysis lack the accuracy to reliably identify cancer — which means missed cancers, or unnecessary tests and surgeries. Dr. Kwon and Dr. Carpenter developed a platform to tell malignant from benign mucinous cysts more accurately, combining quantitative image analysis (analytic morphomics, a process pioneered at Michigan) with primary culture of cyst fluid.
In October 2022 Dr. Carpenter opened her own lab to pursue new research projects; Dr. Kwon continues this project with his team.
Dr. Eileen S. Carpenter is a gastroenterologist and clinician-scientist whose clinical focus is benign and malignant diseases of the pancreas. She is an Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the University of Michigan, holds a joint appointment with the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, and sits on the Pancreatic Cancer Clinic team at the Rogel Cancer Center. Her lab uses endoscopic fine-needle biopsies of pancreatic tumors, with single-cell RNA sequencing, mass cytometry and organoid culture, to study tumor heterogeneity, chemoresistance and immunotherapy targets.
Serves as Committee member on Sky's Scientific Advisory Committee — recused from any discussion of their own proposal.
