Pancreatic Cancer Action Network
Founded in 1999, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is dedicated to fighting the world’s toughest cancer. In our urgent mission to save lives, we attack pancreatic cancer on all fronts: research, clinical initiatives, patient services and advocacy. Our effort is amplified by a nationwide network of grassroots support. We are determined to improve patient outcomes today and to double survival by 2020.

PROJECT TITLE: PanCAN’s Early Detection Initiative (EDI)
Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN)
Pancreatic cancer has the lowest five-year survival rate of all major cancers at 9%, and projected to be the second leading cause of cancer by 2020
EDI Study seeks to create a screening process to proactively find patients’ pancreatic cancer, possibly years before it would have been discovered
Funded in part by Sky Foundation, this initiative was created to find pancreatic cancer biomarkers and develop an early detection test
Research is based on data suggesting the new onset of diabetes in individuals over 50 years of age can be a symptom of an undiagnosed early pancreatic tumor
The initiative will study a cohort of 12,500 people, over a three-year period, who are over the age of 50 and have recently been diagnosed with diabetes
